Educational and Research Facilities

The Computer Science Department has substantial computing facilities. Our computer system is connected to inter-nets through which we can access computer systems, not only in Japan but also in other countries. The department has undertaken to provide a workstation to each faculty member and to provide a number of workstations to each laboratory for postgraduate students and final year undergraduate students. Two computing rooms are well equipped with 72 X-terminals, through which students can access the computer system. The computer system has 7 servers (SUN SPARC SERVER 10/512). Five are used to support the X-terminals in the computing rooms, and two are used as their file servers. The file system of each laboratory is supported by its own server. The Computer Science Department has altogether more than 80 workstations including 72 SUN SPARC STATIONS and 7 SGI Indigo, about 110 X-terminals, and a variety of personal computers (Macintosh,Compaq, PC98, etc.). Some of the workstations are used as color graphics stations. The department has a satellite communication system including a 1.8 meter parabola antenna. Lectures given in the media room of the department can be broadcast to lecture rooms in other locations far away by our satellite communication system.
